It is comforting to learn that no artwork is truely original and is derived by artists directly or indirectly from another piece of art.For many years I tormented myself trying to be original , only to discover that something similar had already been created before and then I would feel guilty of a crime I had not committed. I was also very dismissive of other artists who I felt had created work remotely on the lines of another artist.
I am slowly reaching the realization that artists are collectors and many artists derive their works by adopting the styles, content or processes of existing artists or those they encountered in the past.If you make art and then find it has been done before, instead of getting discouraged you must keep moving on.In fact you have the complete liberty to consciously steal something that resonates with you, but adapt it, transform it in your own unique way, based on your own experiences, make it your very own.
According to Austin Kleon, "an artist's job is to collect ideas"and "nothing is completely original. All creative work came from work that came before.Every new idea is a remix of one or two previous ideas"He goes on to say that just as there is a genology of family, there is genology of ideas.Artists are creative kleptomaniacs and they steal those things that mean something to them.
A very redeeming thought!!
